About the Job

Reporting to the President/CEO, the Director of Communications will set the strategic plan and oversee the execution of all communications initiatives. S/he will work across multiple integrated media platforms and formats to consistently execute the strategic plan to constituent groups inside and outside the agency.

Within the Agency, S/he works closely with a senior peer group (The Senior Leadership Team) to partner on a variety of strategic initiatives. Also, s/he will work with program directors, clinicians and administrators at multiple levels of the organization to execute various marketing/outreach goals.

Outside the Agency, the director is a member of the Lahey Health Communications Council. Also collaborates with the Communications and Marketing Department of Lahey Health and with the Foundation. Also performs community relations functions with other community non-profits.

Manages the day-to-day communications functions, including program and event marketing, project management, community relations, press relations and social media. In managing these functions, the Director balances cost-effective approaches with brand, design and editorial quality.

Full time, 40 hours per week

Responsibilities

  • Provides strategic counsel to senior management on successful strategies to drive colleague engagement. This includes partnering with executives on confidential, time-sensitive and business-critical issues.
  • Develops proactive, forward-thinking internal communications strategies, plans and solutions to inform, educate, and inspire key internal audiences
  • Strengthen LHBS internal brand and culture and effectively communicate large-scale change management initiatives, such as new affiliation communications
  • Collaborates with leaders to develop communications on their behalf, including columns, correspondence, memos, presentations, talking points and other materials.
  • Advises internal clients on communications best practices (including appropriate cascading of information).

1. Strategic planning/ policy: With direction from the President/CEO, the Director of Communications will establish the strategic goals and plans for communications and public relations initiatives, brand management and all corporate policies that pertain to communications and public information. 

2. Project Management/Marketing: Collaborates with program directors to produce and oversee all marketing collateral, e.g, brochures, handouts, palm cards, postcards, mailings, community guides, Web portals and others. Sources and supervises qualified vendors such as designers, printers and translators.

3. Media relations: Maintains an updated media database and pro-actively pitches commentary, editorials and story ideas to the local and regional media. Responds to media-generated calls and triages topic-specific stories to the appropriate clinical sources within the agency and, as needed, within the Lahey Health system.

4. Crisis Communications: Leads the development and assists in the execution of the crisis communications plan. 

5. Publications/writing: Oversees the design, architecture, editing and traffic metrics of the Agency website. In collaboration with the larger team, writes all copy for the website, internal staff e-newsletter, external e-newsletter, the Annual Report, award narratives, fundraising collateral, feature articles and other editorial projects. Collaborates with the larger health system to provide the behavioral health component of multi-service community guides.

6. Performs other related tasks as assigned.

Qualifications

 

  • Minimum of five years’ communications experience, preferably in a non-profit or healthcare setting.
  • Minimum of a bachelor's degree (B. A.) in communications, journalism or English. Master’s degree preferred. Knowledge of MSOffice and working knowledge of some design and editing software programs. Thorough knowledge of AP Style usage.
  • Highly collaborative style; experience developing and implementing communications strategies across multiple media platforms, while engaging with colleagues at all levels of the organization. A strong track record of managing multiple key initiatives concurrently
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively and professionally with a diverse range of constituents, including behavioral health consumers, families, clinicians, law enforcement, peers, and executive staff across the health system. Knowledge of HIPAA and patient boundaries.
  • Sound understanding of how media functions. Consistent press-placement record and media relationships
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret clinical and budgetary information, reports, and legal documents.
  • Ability to write and/or edit speeches and feature articles for publication using AP Style
  • Ability to effectively present and clearly articulate information to senior management, clinical teams, public groups, and/or boards of directors.
